In February 2003 a sub committee of the Making Tracks Steering
Group appointed Dunira Strategy to undertake a review of Nature
Based Tourism (NBT) in the South of Scotland and to recommend
a range of product groups or clusters, against which the viability
of candidate sites could be assessed. This study took the lead
from the original NFO/Dunira research which showed the opportunity
for the NBT product to be linked to other new and existing tourism
products and attractions through clusters or product groups.
These might be defined as geographical for instance, or thematic.
An example would be developing a cluster of sites in the Upper
Tweed Valley, or along a cycling route or based on an historical
place or event.
The project objective was to identify, describe and map to
an agreed methodology sites in the Scottish Borders that currently
offer or could offer visitors a “natural heritage experience”.
The information for Dumfries and Galloway had already been
gathered for an earlier study in that area.
